2010 Tacoma 4WD Voluntary Recall: Front Drive Shaft

February 12, 2010 - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc, today announced it will conduct a voluntary safety recall to inspect the front drive shaft on a small production run of certain 2010 model year Tacoma 4WD trucks.  The front shaft in approximately 8,000 vehicles may include a component that contains cracks that developed during the manufacturing process.  As those vehicles are used, the cracks may eventually lead to the separation of the drive shaft at the joint portion.

This condition only involves two specific front drive shaft production lot numbers installed in certain 2010 model year Tacoma 4WD vehicles. No other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved.

Premier will be happy to perform an inspection to identify the specific lot numbers located on the front drive shaft. Based upon the inspection results, in a limited number of cases, the front drive shaft may need to be replaced.

The inspection is estimated to take ten minutes.  The inspection and/or replacement will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Toyota will notify owners by first class mail starting in mid-March, 2010.

Detailed information and answers to questions about issues related to this recall are available to customers at www.toyota.com/recall and at the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

2010 Prius Recall: ABS Sfotware Update

February 8, 2010 - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc, today announced it will conduct a voluntary safety recall on approximately 133,000 2010 Model Year Prius vehicles and 14,500 Lexus Division 2010 HS 250h vehicles to update software in the vehicle's anti-lock brake system (ABS). No other Toyota, Lexus, or Scion vehicles are involved in this recall.

The ABS, in normal operation, engages and disengages rapidly (many times per second) as the control system senses and reacts to tire slippage. Some 2010 model year Prius and 2010 HS 250h owners have reported experiencing inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the ABS is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.

Toyota has responded to owner concerns with a running production change for 2010 Prius that was introduced last month, improving the ABS system's response time, as well as the system's overall sensitivity to tire slippage.

"We're committed to doing everything we can - as fast as we can - to restore consumer trust in Toyota, and these recalls are part of this effort," said Jim Lentz, President and Chief Operating Officer, Toyota Motor Sales. "We regret the inconvenience this recall will cause to Prius and HS 250h owners, and will do our best with the support of our dealers to make sure that it is conducted in the most trouble-free manner possible."

The recall will allow Premier Toyota to perform the software update on 2010 Prius vehicles sold prior to this running production change. Only Prius vehicles produced since May 2009 and all HS 250h vehicles are subject to this recall. First- and second-generation Prius vehicles use a different ABS system and are not involved in this campaign.

The ABS system on the Lexus HS 250h is similar in design to the Prius. The software adjustment planned for HS 250h production and dealer modification is being finalized and will be announced very soon.

Toyota will begin mailing letters to Prius owners included in this recall next week and HS 250h owners within the next few weeks, to let them know when to bring their vehicles into a dealership. Owners will only receive a letter if their vehicle is involved in the recall.

Detailed information about these recalls is available to customers at www.toyota.com/recall and at the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Potential Floor Mat Interference with Accelerator Pedal - New Vehicles Added to Recall List

January 28, 2010 - As communicated last Fall, Toyota announced it will initiate a Safety Recall for potential floor mat interference with the accelerator pedal. The condition involves the potential for an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat to interfere with the accelerator pedal and cause it to get stuck in the wide open position. Toyota has determined that this defect does not exist in vehicles in which the driver's side floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured.

On January 27, Toyota amended the Defect Information Report (DIR) filed with the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) to include the following vehicles:

Toyota (DIR Update)
2009 - 2010 Corolla
2009 - 2010 Matrix
2009 - 2010 Venza
2008 - 2010 Highlander

Toyota
2005 - 2010 Avalon
2007 - 2010 Camry
2004 - 2009 Prius
2005 - 2010 Tacoma
2007 - 2010 Tundra

Lexus
2007 - 2010 ES
2006 - 2010 IS

Driver's floor mats should never be stacked. Never place any floor mat - aftermarket or not - on top of another driver's floor mat. Mats should also not be flipped over with the bottom-side up.

Consumers should make sure the floor mats are compatible for their model and model year. Also, they need to be sure that the floor mats are properly secured using the appropriate retention device (clips).

What Is The Condition?
The defect is the potential for an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat to interfere with the accelerator pedal and cause it to get stuck in the wide open position. A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a
crash, serious injury or death. Toyota has determined that this defect does not exist in vehicles in which the driver's side floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured.

What Should Customers Do Until They Have The Recall Remedy Performed?
Toyota has determined that the pedal entrapment can only occur in vehicles in which the driver's side floor mat is not compatible with the vehicle and/or is not properly secured.
To help reduce the risk of incorrect floor mat installation and/or application, we request that consumers take out any removable driver's floor mat and NOT replace it with any other floor mat until the safety recall remedy has been completed on the vehicle. After the recall remedy has been completed, only floor mats designed specifically for the vehicle and which are properly secured should be installed on the driver's floor.

When Will Toyota Genuine All Weather Floor Mats (AWFM) Be Available For Purchase?
The newly designed Toyota genuine All Weather Floor Mats (AWFM) will become available for purchase again in a few months. Please check with Premier's Parts Department regularly for specific availability dates.

What If a Driver Experiences Accelerator Pedal Interference. What Should They Do?
Should the vehicle continue to accelerate rapidly after releasing the accelerator pedal, this could be an indication of floor mat interference. If this occurs, Toyota recommends the driver take the following actions:

  1. First, if it is possible and safe to do so, pull-back the floor mat and dislodge it from the accelerator pedal; then pull over and stop the vehicle. If the floor mat cannot be dislodged, then firmly and steadily step on the brake pedal with both feet. Do not pump the brake pedal repeatedly as this will increase the effort required to slow the vehicle.
  2. Shift the transmission gear selector to the Neutral (N) position and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road and turn off the engine.
  3. If unable to put the vehicle in Neutral, turn the key backward to turn the engine OFF (keeping the auxiliary power on.) This will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost. If the vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push the button for at least three seconds to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button. If the vehicle is equipped with a conventional key-ignition, turn the ignition key to the ACC position to turn off the engine. Do NOT remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel.

Owners with questions or concerns are asked to please contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center (1 800 331-4331), or consult the information posted at

January Recall - Toyota Recalls 2.3 million Vehicles - Accelerator Pedal

January 25, 2010 - As you may have seen on the television, Toyota has issued a recall of many popular Toyota models. The area of concern: in rare instances, certain accelerator mechanisms may stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to idle position. The vehicles affected are as follows:

2005 - 2010 Avalon
2007 - 2010 Camry
2009 - 2010 Corolla
 Only   2010 Highlander
2009 - 2010 Matrix
2009 - 2010 RAV4
2008 - 2010 Sequoia
2007 - 2010 Tundra

Is This Recall Related to the Floor Mats Recall Previously Announced?
No... this is a separate recall from the on-going recall to reduce the risk of pedal entrapment by incorrect or out-of-place floor mats.

What's Going to Happen Now?

Toyota is in the process of notifying current Toyota owners effected by the recall via paper mail. Be sure to watch your mailbox for this important piece.

If you do experience a sticking accelerator pedal, please do not hesitate to contact our service center and schedule an appointment to have your vehicle inspected.

What Can I Do If It Happens To Me?
There are 3 easy steps you can take to control a vehicle with a sticking accelerator pedal:
  1. Place your foot firmly on the brake (do NOT pump the brake as this will wear out the vacuum needed to create braking power.)
  2. Shift the vehicle into "Neutral". If you cannot shift the vehicle into "Neutral", simply turn the ignition key backward to 'kill' the engine but keeping your auxiliary power on (this way you will not lock the steering wheel and still have braking and steering capabilities.)
  3. Turn on your flashers and coast off to the side of the road safely. Once stopped, shift the vehicle into "Park" and turn the vehicle completely off, removing your key.
